Council's open spaces are categorised into neighbourhood, township, district or regional level. Neighbourhood play spaces are intended to cater to those within a 400m radius (walking distance). These play spaces will include equipment such as climbing, swings, slides and rockers, concrete pathways, seating and bins. They generally do not include facilities such as public toilets, BBQ's and shelters. Playgrounds are renewed in accordance with Council’s playground condition audit program. All playgrounds are assessed annually by an independent auditor to ensure they continue to meet playground safety standards and every three years by qualified Council officers to ensure they remain in good, usable condition.

Priority for replacement is given to playgrounds where age or deterioration is affecting the usability and or safety of the equipment. Items such as hardware condition (major screw and bolts that hold the playground together), rust, timber condition, drainage issues and old equipment that no longer meets standards are considered during a playground audit. Community request is also considered.
