New social media age restrictions

18 November 2025

Advice for sport organisations

From 10 December 2025, age-restricted social media platforms will have to take reasonable steps to prevent Australians under the age of 16 from creating or keeping an account. The restrictions aim to protect young Australians from pressures and risks that users can be exposed to while logged in to social media accounts.

The age restrictions are likely to apply to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, X and YouTube, as well as other platforms. See the latest list.

Social media services are widely used across the sporting community for many reasons. If your sport involves members under the age of 16, it’s important to prepare for upcoming restrictions. To get your organisation ready, sport leaders should consider the following:

  • Visit the eSafety social media age restrictions hub to see how this could impact your sporting community.
  • Talk with your committees about under-16s using age-restricted platforms in your sport. Use eSafety’s get-ready guides for families and young people to prepare.
  • Check in with your peak sport body to see if they have guidance.
  • Consider exploring new ways of communicating with young people and their parents.
  • If you're changing how your organisation uses social media, update your policies and clearly communicate changes to volunteers and members.

To help organisations prepare, eSafety is offering a number of free 30-minute online sessions for educators, youth-serving professionals, parents and carers.
