Project background

Under the Road Management Act 2004 and Road Management Act (General) Regulations 2016, each Council must review its Road Management Plan every four years following a local government election.

What is the RMP?

The RMP outlines how we inspect, repair, and maintain Council's roads, pathways and associated infrastructure. It contains the standards and timelines for inspecting and repairing our assets. This ensures that our roads and pathways are safe and well-maintained for everyone in the community.

The core principles informing the review of the RMP are:

  • Maintaining or increasing community safety
  • Complying with regulatory requirements and standards
  • Aligning with best practices within Local Government

By adhering to the RMP, we can systematically manage our road and pathway network, ensure timely inspections and repairs, and ultimately provide a safer environment for all community members.

  • 1666K roads

    Sealed 844 and unsealed 822

  • 932K pathways

Shared and other including pedestrian and bike

What has changed from the previous plan?

  • Medium-density major city

Cardinia is now classified by the ABS as a medium-density major city, with an additional 7,000 residents in the Shire since the previous RMP.

  • More walkable suburbs

Suburbs like Pakenham, Officer, and Beaconsfield are becoming denser and more walkable, thanks to growing residential developments and activity centres that encourage walking.

  • The Municipal Association of Victoria's template

This template has been developed for Councils to adopt, aiming to provide a more consistent approach to the inspection, repair, and maintenance of assets across the State.
