Project Update - December 2023

We’d like to thank everyone who has provided valuable advice, input and feedback on this project over the last few years. Through multiple rounds of consultation with the community, we’ve identified a need to review and re-evaluate the concept design for this public art project. Through the most recent consultation, we learnt that there was a significant percentage of community members who were not in support of the proposed horse sculpture at Dick Jones Reserve, and expressed concerns about the location, the size of the sculpture and the theme of the artwork.

We remain committed to the provision of public art in Lang Lang and across Cardinia Shire, and we’re extremely grateful for the feedback we’ve received to date. We’re taking the time to ensure the Lang Lang community are involved in the decision-making on this project - with the aim to give local residents more opportunities to shape the artwork design in Lang Lang that the community will grow to love over many years.

We will be engaging in community consultation early next year, to seek your input on a new concept for a public art piece in Lang Lang. By doing this our intention is to create a timeless piece that will stay relevant in the long term and that the community feel connected to and proud of.

About the Project

In line with Cardinia Shire Council’s Public Art Policy and strategies within the Council Plan, we are seeking your feedback on a proposed installation of a horse sculpture at Dick Jones Reserve, Lang Lang in homage to Lang Lang’s rodeo history.

We previously engaged with the local community in 2020, and received positive feedback in support of this project.

Through previous consultation with community, as well as in-person and written responses, we heard that for this project to be successful, the artwork needs to be:

  • visible from the road;
  • an iconic piece in homage to the Lang Lang Rodeo;
  • a destination piece that will bring visitors into the town, and;
  • a piece that will encourage visitors to spend time in the town and contribute to Lang Lang's economy.

With this in mind, Dick Jones Reserve was selected and supported as the suitable location for the proposed art piece. Due to significant delays from COVID-19, it was necessary to postpone the project. The time has now arrived for this project to be re-explored and we want your feedback to understand if it's something that you still support.

Please participate in the survey below and give us your feedback, or attend our pop-up in the reserve to speak to the team. Details are listed in the Key Dates section on this page.

We are collecting your feedback to inform the Lang Lang Public Art project. To see our complete Privacy Policy please see cardinia.vic.gov.au/site/scripts/terms.php#
