Victoria Strengthens Protections for Customer-Facing Workers

14 November 2025

The Victorian Government has introduced new legislation to safeguard retail, hospitality, fast-food, and transport workers from abuse and violence. The Crimes Amendment Bill 2025 creates specific offences for assaulting or threatening these workers, with penalties of up to five years’ imprisonment for serious assaults and six months for intimidation or verbal abuse.

The reforms also target violent crimes such as ram raids, now classified as aggravated burglary with sentences of up to 25 years. Additionally, Workplace Protection Orders will allow businesses to ban individuals who pose a risk to staff safety.

These measures respond to alarming industry data showing widespread abuse and threats against frontline workers. The legislation is expected to pass before Christmas, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to safer workplaces and stronger protections for businesses and employees.
