Supporting Asylum Seekers Into Work

28 October 2025

The Victorian Government has committed $3 million to the Asylum Seeker VET program, helping refugees and asylum seekers in Victoria access free or subsidised vocational training through initiatives like Free TAFE and Skills First. This funding supports the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) in continuing its work, including wraparound support and follow-up services.

Since December 2024, over 950 asylum seekers have enrolled in TAFE courses, with the ASRC assisting more than 250 individuals in accessing education and training. Popular study areas include childcare, community services, disability support, and nursing, which align with sectors experiencing high demand for skilled workers.

This initiative complements a broader $48 million investment in the Reconnect program, which supports people disengaged from education or employment, including asylum seekers, early school leavers, and those with justice system involvement.

Government and ASRC leaders praised the program’s role in promoting social inclusion, economic contribution, and multiculturalism, helping asylum seekers move from surviving to thriving.
