Strengthening Food Security In Victoria

18 August 2025

The Victorian Government has amended planning rules to support micro-abattoirs, classifying them as Section 1 uses in key rural zones—eliminating permit requirements if regulations are met. This change aims to:

  • Boost food security by enabling easier access to local meat processing.
  • Support small-scale livestock producers and rural economies.
  • Protect farmland and green wedges from urban encroachment.
  • Ensure micro-abattoirs remain small, contained, and environmentally safe.
  • Empower local councils to manage permits and public health oversight.
  • Encourage community and Traditional Owner consultation in planning.
