New Food Safety Standards

10 January 2025

Food Standards Australia and New Zealand have announced new food safety standards for horticulture in Australia, effective from February 12, 2025, target primary producers and processors of berries, leafy vegetables, and melons.

These standards aim to reduce foodborne illnesses linked to fresh produce by establishing baseline safety requirements. Key measures include notifying authorities, ensuring product traceability, managing safety of inputs, and maintaining worker and premises hygiene. The standards address specific risks for each commodity group and are designed to support nationally consistent food safety practices. Compliance materials will be provided by local food regulators and industry bodies. When these standards come into effect, these businesses will be regulated by Agriculture Victoria.
